Kinfolk Community RVA, is a multi-dimensional outreach program for Richmond’s public housing community
Our Mission
Founded in 2011, in the Mosby Court Public neighborhood, Kinfolk Community RVA set forth as an initiative to identify families with a willingness to improve their quality of life. Residents were simply asked two questions:
- What do you want?
- What are you willing to do to assist in reaching that goal?
Our platform is to promote self empowerment and community sustainability through a bevy of holistic services and programs.
THE LEADERSHIP COUNCIL, an 8-15 member body of adults and children in charge of ensuring that community needs are addressed.
YOUTH ARTS AND EDUCATION LAB, a safe place for children to express themselves through visual, performance, and literary arts
URBAN CONSERVATION CORPS, a 20-member team of young adult responsible for litter control and transforming vacant and donated spaces into gardens and recreational green areas.
FIRST 84, an initiative to find and secure jobs for 84 residents and private housing for an additional 84 residents.
RETURNING CITIZENS PROGRAM, an effort to find employment for those who have been previously removed from society through incarceration, military service, or otherwise.
“It is a call for black people in this country to unite, to recognize their heritage, to build a sense of community. It is a call for black people to define their own goals, to lead their own organizations.”
- Stokely Carchimael
What We’ve Achieved
Since its founding, Kinfolk Community RVA has improved the lives of over 200 Mosby Court residents with 15 gardens, 15 murals, and 100% success rate in its workforce outreach program. Although Mosby Court is our headquarters, we encourage members from other communities to participate and utilize our services. Our ultimate goal is to represent the possibilities for upward mobility in public housing units everywhere
